Link Building - the Art of SEO

Search Engines are favouring websites with quality incoming links. In the past (and still today) webmasters and SEO consultants have added their website links to link farms and link directories in the hope of increasing their Google PageRank. Google is however penalising websites who are adding their links to these types of websites.

Why is Google doing this?
They have used the old saying quantity vs quality. Matt Cutts who heads the anti-spam department at Google, has said in several interviews that the importance of penalising websites that link to irrelevant websites is paramount. They are doing this to sift out the poor quality websites from that of the quality websites. Thanks to Matt Cutts and his team we are now seeing more relevant search results because of this slight tweak in their algorithms.

When searching for potential incoming links the first place to start will be to search your competitors websites. Your competitors who are ranked in the top 10 rankings will have quality links already which you will need plus more to overtake them in the organic rankings.

The best links a website can have are natural, one-way inbound links. These are links that are posted by other websites, forums or blogs. These show a natural interest in something the linked website offers such as valuable information, news, a tool or some other resource.

The more incoming one-way links a web page has the more relevant search engines will consider this page and give it a higher PageRank (Google).
