Title tags, their influence in SEO

The first of the five topics I will be discussing Title Tags, their influence in SEO.

1) Title Tags
2) Meta descriptions
3) Optimised page content
4) Incoming links
5) User friendly URL’s (no session ID’s)

- Title Tags, their influence in SEO

Title tags are the most important factor in search engine optimisation. The largest search engine, Google, organises website pages according to their title tags (I always refer to Google as it as the most used search engine in the world). The words situated in the beginning of the tag are considered to be more important than the words near the end.

An example of this can be seen below. I typed in ‘SEO specialist’ in Google South Africa and WebGrowth’s search engine ranking was at four. As you can see I have inserted the phrase ‘SEO specialist’ in the beginning of the title tag ensuring that Google views this as an important search phrase.

So many times I see webmasters insert their company name in the title tag. This strategy does not increase new visitors to a website as only those who know the company name will search for it. Those who do not know the company name will search for keywords within the industry. In this case it is ‘SEO specialist’, if I were to insert the keyword ‘Webgrowth’ in the title tag it would be a waste of meta space as the company name is inserted all over the website. There is therefore no need to insert the company name in the title tag.

The keyword density should be between five and seven words. There is no hard and fast rule to say that this is the case but from trial and error I have found that these amount of words create the correct keyword density and so does not look to spammy by Google search bots.
