The amount of content per blog post does not matter?

On Wednesday, 26 November, I wrote a post for my blog regarding social media marketing, I came across a very good viral marketing campaign by Ameriquest and decided to embed their YouTube video into the post.  Besides the video, the amount of text was only 26 words.  Approximately 1.5 lines!  I was not planning to achieve heroics for certain keywords in Google…

It seems that Google has taken a liking to the post and has put it at #1 in Google.co.za for the keyword ‘social media marketing‘, the search results amounting to 143, 000.  How long it stays at #1 remains to be seen, blog posts usually have a shelf life of 6 to 7 days before slipping down the rankings.  If it is that good a post and bloggers/webmasters start linking back to the post then obviously it will stay #1 for a much longer period (another reason why quality content is priority).

The general rule of thumb for SEO (search engine optimisation) has been between 250 to 500 words per post.  Although I cannot prove it yet I think this belief is soon becoming a myth.

One very important note is that I posted it to digg.com, the SEO gurus in the USA do believe that submitting your posts to Digg will increase the rate at which Google indexes each post.  Hence, I posted it on 26 November and Google had already cached it on 26 November.  There have also been rumours that Google wants to purchase Digg, clearly there is romance in the air!

I will keep tracking this post within the Google rankings and give feedback of the outcomes.  This is truly groundbreaking work for me and am excited to see things happen so quickly now!
